Judge Dredd TV Series At Least 2 Years Away

Fans of Judge Dredd have plenty of reasons to celebrate, as it was announced earlier this year that a new TV show based on the character, titled Judge Dredd: Mega City One, was being developed. Despite the excitement over the adaptation of the 2000 AD character, try to calm yourself down, as one of the show’s producers recently revealed to SFX Magazine that it might be two years before the series airs anywhere.

Jason Kingsley revealed to the magazine, “Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard. My best guess is that it’s at least two years away. But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.”

As far as the show’s tone is concerned, Kingsley revealed, “Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore.” He added, “The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.”

In 1995, Sylvester Stallone starred in an adaptation of the character that leaned into the goofy, campy elements of the character, and considering how few members of the movie-going audience were familiar with the character, the film ultimately ended up a flop.

Luckily, 2012 gave us the film Dredd 3D, which starred Karl Urban (Star Trek) and Lena Heady (Game of Thrones), that gave audiences a much more authentic look at the character, leaning heavily into the violent sci-fi elements made popular in the original comics.

Sadly, despite how much fans connected with the Urban-starring film, it still didn’t earn enough at the box office to gain a sequel, even with fans regularly campaigning to get the creative team to revive the character.

Brian Jenkins, another one of the show’s producers, revealed on the 2000 AD Thrill-cast that Urban returning to the franchise isn’t out of the question.

“We have had many conversations prior to this, about all sorts of things. He’s also very busy, a full-time professional actor,” explained Jenkins. “So we’re going to have some long and complicated conversations I would imagine, and we’ll see where we go. It’s too early to tell yet, but if we can use him and he’s available to us, then I think that would be absolutely brilliant.”

He added, “There’s always a possibility he will be busy, or that his schedule for other movies won’t allow- Basically, we don’t know at this stage.”

Kingsley mentioned to SFX Magazine that, although talks about who will star in the show haven’t officially begun, he knows Urban “well enough to have a chat with him” about reprising the role.
