You guys just can’t get enough of PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS. This game has been a true grass-roots success story, spreading like a virus almost purely from word-of-mouth recommendations and viral streams, and it didn’t take long for PUBGs to become the most watched game on Twitch. As we all know, a huge stream can sell a game very effectively, and today PUBGs is celebrating over five million copies sold, up from the four million copies we were celebrating this time last month.

The rate at which PUBGs has grown is nothing short of astounding, and at this rate, the game is going to catch up with and surpass H1Z1 in no time. It’s an incredible feat for a studio so small, and for a game that, until it blew up, also happened to be “so small” in its reach. This is a genuine testament to PUBGs approach to the standard “last man standing” formula. It didn’t have a huge marketing budget, and it doesn’t have a team of hundreds of developers making sure that every polygonal inch is spit-polished. It’s just fun.
You can expect more games to crop up soon, emulating Battlegrounds‘ approach. Indeed, a while back we heard Ubisoft hinting that it was going to bring some “last man standing” style content to The Division, and the Survival mode in the latest expansion comes pretty close to achieving the same desperate feeling players report at the beginning (and often times throughout) a match of Battlegrounds.
Since the game can only be played on PC right now, it was considered a huge win for Microsoft at E3 when it announced that PUBGs would be coming exclusively to Xbox One and Xbox One X later this year. You better believe Sony will be itching to get something similar on PS4, if not PUBGs itself. We have no idea what kind of exclusivity deal Bluehole and Microsoft have struck, but since I’m primarily a PS4 player this generation, I’m hoping we eventually see it go multi-platform.
