Last weekend, Dragon Ball Super left fans reeling when it kicked off a brand-new story arc. The ‘Universal Survival’ saga is off to an intriguing start as Goku foolishly asked Zen-Oh to hold a grand martial arts event to test all the universes. However, the Saiyan failed to heed his comrades’ warnings, and now the deadly tournament threatens to kill all of Goku’s friends and family. Of course, Goku is no stranger to life-or-death fights, but there’s rarely been such little retcon wiggle room in the Dragon Ball franchise.

Naturally, fans are wondering if the pressure will get to Goku once he realizes that there’s no Zen-Oh or Dragon Balls to fix the tournament’s outcomes. So, really, it’s no wonder that speculation about a new Super Saiyan state is running rampant. The arc’s new opening all but ensured the conversation thanks to one incriminating scene.

Online, netizens are going back-and-forth about whether Goku will display a new Super Saiyan state in the ‘Universal Survival’ arc. The storyline has every ingredient that would push Goku to level-up his power. The tournament will pit him against dozens of new warriors, Goku’s pride will be on the line, and the hero knows his entire Universe will be destroyed should his team lose. With Zen-Oh overseeing the event, the Omni-King will not be one to revive Universe 7 should Goku slip, and fans know the protagonist tends to power-up when he’s backed into a corner.

In the opening for Dragon Ball Super‘s new arc, fans are debating if a glimpse of Goku’s new power was shown. The end of the opening sees Goku enter the Super Saiyan Blue state as he fends off another fighter, but that aura soon changes. Without warning, Goku becomes surrounded by dark red-blach energy, and a brief gap in the shroud shows Goku smiling somewhat maniacally. The hero then comes out of the state in his base form and continues to pummel his opponent.

Of course, there are fans who are convinced the power shown is nothing more than a Kaio-ken state. In Dragon Ball Super, Goku gained the ability to finally use Kaio-ken whilst in a Super Saiyan state, but the ability is limited and wholly damaging. The form also looks different from the recent aura shown as Goku’s shroud is simply red now instead of blue-red.

So, what do you think? Will Goku be gifted a new Super Saiyan state in this new arc? Or are fans reading into the opening a bit too much?
