There are few things Dragon Ball fans like more than inside jokes and references. Well, an argument can be made that nothing will outdo their love for Spirit Bombs, but Dragon Ball Super came close to doing away with that counter this week. After a long wait, the anime finally brought Goku face-to-face with Android 17 as the pair were never able to meet before. However, the pairing wasn’t the only throwback the episode gave to the ever-popular Dragon Ball Z series.

No, the episode went on to reference one very important character who was introduced towards the anime’s end.
In the 86th episode of Dragon Ball Super, fans watched as Dende and Goku began to look for Android 17 as the latter wishes to recruit him to fight in the Tournament of Power. As the planet’s kami, Dende helps Goku locate the man and even shuttles the Saiyan to the island where Android 17 works as a park ranger.
During their travels, Dende and Goku take a minute to catch up, and the Saiyan says he is surprised he didn’t notice Android 17’s power signature given his strength. Dende waves it off, but then the Namekian goes on to say there is another powerful warrior out there Goku may want to meet.
Dende says there is a very strong boy who is being raised in a nearby village. The kami goes on to say the kid is very skilled at martial arts and that Goku could likely train the boy how to use his natural talents. Goku seems a bit confused by the request, but Dende soon clarifies his prompt; The boy in question is none other than the pure-hearted incarnate of Majin Buu.
If you are a fan of Dragon Ball Z, this short description should ring a bell. Towards the anime’s end, fans were introduced to a boy named Uub when the warrior fought against Goku in the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament. While Uub came from a poor home, he uses his rough upbringing to fuel his desire for justice and wishes to help his family. After Goku meets the boy during the martial arts event, he winds up training Uub, and fans were able to see the fruits of the training in Dragon Ball GT.
For now, there is no word on whether Uub will actually make an appearance in Dragon Ball Super, but it doesn’t seem likely the boy will meet Goku if so. The pair had never encountered one another in Dragon Ball Z, and the meeting is chronologically set after the span of Dragon Ball Super. If Goku were to meet Uub now, he would need to forget all about the boy before Dragon Ball Super catches up to the time of Dragon Ball Z.
