Every year there is a plethora of new anime series that are released, but there are only as few shows that withstand the test of time and continue to hold ratings. One Piece is one of the most popular anime franchises of all time, and the long running franchise has been constantly getting higher ratings than the ever popular Dragon Ball Super. However, with the story arc picking up and Frieza’s big return, it looks like Dragon Ball Super is breaking down the pirates’ rating wall.

In the program average ratings in Japan, Dragon Ball Super has finally surpassed One Piece’s ratings. The 94th episode of Dragon Ball did the trick, as the episode received a 6.3% compared to One Piece’s 5.8%. Whether is it could be credited with the return of Frieza, or the build up to the highly anticipated tournament is unknown, but the feat is impressive regardless.

The synopsis of Dragon Ball Super‘s current saga can be read here:

“According to an invitation that Goku gets, Zen-Oh (Omni King) is starting a martial arts tournament between all the universes called “Chikara no Taikai” (Tournament of Power). But it is the beginning of universal destruction. Something awaits the winners and losers of this tournament. What will become of this fierce team battle between each universe’s elite warriors?”

Dragon Ball Super‘s “Universal Survival” saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
