The first season of the anime began streaming back in December or 2015. The last episode of that season began streaming last April. After the success of streaming the show, the first season shipped out a director's cut compilation of the first season, which was titled Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky. Right Stuf Anime also imported a Blu-Ray version of the director's cut, that came with an English Dub and in the original Japanese as well last year.

For those unfamiliar with Gundam Thunderbolt, the story of the second season begins on Earth seven months after the One Year War ended. The few remnants of the Principality of Zeon rebuild and form as the Republic of Zeon and continue to battle. The main protagonist, Daryl, was the one who piloted the mobile suit Psycho Zaku in the end of the war at the "Thunderbolt Sector,". Daryl lost the Psycho Zaku in battle, and so he descends back to Earth to take up an intelligence position to gain information about a group, the South Seas Alliance, who were located within the earth. There is a new prototype mobile suit, the Atlas Gunda, and the character named Io, is chosen to pilot it and heads toward Earth.

The manga the series was adapted from was original launched in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine in March 2012. The entire story was published into a nine compiled book volume this year. The series was successful, and Viz Media started publishing the manga in English, and shipped the manga's second volume on February 21.

The new second season of the anime will debut beginning with the fifth episode on March 24. It will be available to download or through a video on demand service that allows rental for a short period.
