The holiday season brings a number of things to mind. Family, togetherness, love, are all well and good, but the most important thing? The food.
There are no better examples of delicious food and their gluttonous purveyors than in anime. Ever wish you could mow down mountains of delicious goodies and still have enough strength to defeat a big villain? What about the ability to morph your body into ridiculous shapes in order to eat as much, and as quickly, as possible?
Most anime characters treat food as a delicacy or a normal facet of life, not really thinking too much about their next meal. For the characters in this list, however, food is a way of life.
These five characters are the biggest eaters in anime, and they hold that title proudly. Scroll down below to see our choices.
Choji - 'Naruto'
In Naruto, there are a few characters who love to eat, but none has a bigger appetite than Choji.
Choji is a member of the Akimichi ninja clan, a clan whose ninja traits and techniques come from a larger body. They can grow certain limbs to giant sizes to attack, use their bodies as an invincible boulder, or even grow giant themselves when they have full control of their inner chakra.
Because of the strain his clan's techniques put on his body, Choji must constantly eat to keep up his strength. He's often seen with a bag of potato chips in the original run of Naruto, and even moves on to large helpings of steak in Naruto: Shippuden.
His dedication to food is so great, he now even trains his daughter to eat in the same way in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. They often have battles to see who can eat the most ramen!prevnext
Fuu - 'Samurai Champloo'
The lanky character designs of Manglobe's Samurai Champloo do not necessarily scream "big eaters," but that's what makes Fuu's inclusion here so great.
As the wandering samurai trio of Mugen, Jin, and Fuu often found themselves without any money, they were starving and looking for a free meal. In episode six, "Stranger Searching," the trio stumbled on a small town's rice eating contest. They then decided to enter - regardless of the winning prize - just so they could eat for the day.
While Mugen and Jin weren't able to put away more than a couple of bowls of rice, Fuu surprised every spectator and put away tons of it. Likening her stomach to a black hole, larger male contestants couldn't keep up. Although swatting away a fly eventually kept her from winning the whole thing, she was happy enough to eat as much as she did.
Hilariously enough, she briefly appeared to be much heavier after the contest and sang a little ditty about her fullness.prevnext
Toriko - 'Toriko'
Toriko is a character so dedicated to new delicacies, he often fights terrible villains and monsters for the best ingredients.
Toriko is a series where the "Gourmet World" outweighs the importance of the human world. As civilization only covers less than a third of the Earth many years into the future, the best food and ingredients have become the most sought after resource now that more exotic plants and beasts have cropped up.
The main character, Toriko, is known as a "Gourmet Hunter." Using his inhuman strength and speed, he's trying his best to collect a list of rare ingredients in order to satisfy his ultimate goal: cooking a perfect full-course meal.
His eating prowess definitely stands out amongst the rest of Sheuisha's Weekly Shonen Jump offerings, even going so far as searching for an ingredient known as "GOD."prevnext
Monkey D. Luffy - 'One Piece'
Not only is Monkey D. Luffy hungry, but his rubber band body allows him to stuff as much food into his belly as possible.
Luffy once ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit, which gave his body a rubber's elasticity. He's adventuring his way across the sea in order to find a mythical treasure known as "One Piece," and become the Pirate King in the process. But while he uses his power to defeat strong pirate villains, you can more often find Luffy uses his rubber body to eat.
Luffy can eat while holding a coherent conversation, he eats while he sleeps, he eats to recover after fighting off bounty hunters in the middle of a food and alcohol coma, and eventually his fullness turns him into a balloon.
You would think walking around with a belly full of food would be a huge weakness, but Luffy can digest that food in no time flat. Even if he doesn't decide to, his appetite can even get so abrasive that he recently turned his giant belly into a new technique, "Gear Fourth - Tank Man" and hilariously put an end to an incredible baddie.prevnext
Goku - 'Dragon Ball'
When thinking of big eaters in anime, most minds are drawn to Goku for good reason.
Setting a template for many shonen action anime to follow, Goku often had a huge appetite. Starting as a kid in Dragon Ball, he often ate large fish and multiple helpings of food, and the amount only increased as he trained his body and grew stronger.
As an adult, he's often being shown eating folks out of house and home, stating that all he needs to do to recover from a tough battle is to eat his fill of good food. He might be challenged for the biggest eater on Dragon Ball by Beerus and Whis on Dragon Ball Super, but even two gods with an unbelievable appetite don't match what Goku can put away.prev
