If there’s one thing you should know about Attack on Titan, it is that the show will kill off everyone you love. That is, those who are in the franchise. No character is safe in Attack on Titan, not even lead protagonists. When Titans are on the prowl, it is every character for themselves, and the franchise has shown some of its beloved characters getting torn limb by limb since it debuted years ago.

This month, fans were thrust back into the trying, gory world of Attack on Titan when the franchise made a comeback. The anime‘s second season finally debuted after years on hiatus, and the latest episode had fans on the edges of their seats. Attack on Titan followed up its season premiere with an episode focused solely on Sasha Blouse, and many fans were terrified the potato-loving girl would be killed because of the spotlight.
Thankfully, Sasha made it out of the episode alive – but she wasn’t always meant to. When creator Hajime Isayama first drew out the story of episode 27, Sasha was killed during her final stand against her hometown’s Titan. However, the artist changed his mind after editors pleaded with him to keep the heroine alive.
Originally, Attack on Titan‘s ninth volume was meant to house the death of Sasha. Isayama intended for chapter 36 to feature the character’s death as she circled back to her hometown after evacuating a child who had watched a Titan slowly eat their mother. Unarmed, Sasha was originally meant to fight back against the beast and lose her life in the process, but Isayama changed his mind after his editor could not keep it together.
In fact, the editor has admitted he went to the bathroom to cry after he read Isayama’s first storyboard. He then persuaded the artist to keep Sasha around for a bit longer, saying it didn’t feel like it was the right time to kill off the heroine. So, for now, it looks like Sasha will live to eat more potatoes on another day – but that could change at any time.
