Attack on Titan fans may think they know everything about the series, but Hajime Isayama likes to keep readers on their toes. The creator is known to slip odd references in the Attack on Titan manga to see how many fans catch onto the nods. And, now, Isayama just confirmed one of his characters is actually designed be a female-version of Eren Yeager.

Well, sort of.

Recently, Isayama did an interview with Bessatsu Shonen Magazine about Attack on Titan. An early look at the issue includes an interview snippet where Isayama talks character inspiration, and the artist admitted Gabi has more in common with Eren than you may think.
“Gabi,” Isayama started. “She has a similar feel to the female Eren I drew during a Bessatsu Shonen event.”
For those unfamiliar with Eren’s gender-bent past, there is not much to catch up on. The artist sketched what Eren would look like as a woman back in 2013, and the images were immortalized on Isayama’s blog. Fans figured the pictures were all in good fun, but it looks like the creator found a way to repurpose the sketches in later years.
It is fitting that Gabi would be the character who borrows from Eren’s female form. The character is the cousin of Reiner, and she is a soldier for Marley. As a candidate for the Armored Titan power, Gabi has grown up idolizing the power of Titans, and she has become headstrong through it. Gabi is known for her determination on the battlefield, a trait which she shares with Eren once the boy earns his Survey Corps placement.
