If there is one thing Naruto fans are into, it is easter eggs. The franchise stands as one of shonen’s top titles, and it continues to live on through sequel anime series like Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Otakus are keen to scout out the new show for all things easter egg, and the anime’s latest episode did not let them down.
After all, Boruto did drop a rather odd reference to Naruto’s mother.
In the 16th episode of Boruto, fans watched as the anime’s titular hero got used to his normal life once he saved Konoha from a chakra beast. One scene sees Boruto preparing to snack on a local hamburger, and the ninja notes the meal is “supposed to be hotter than their Habanero Burger I had before.”
Of course, the note makes sense because habanero peppers are rather spicy, but Naruto has a particular fondness of the term. Way back in the day, Naruto’s mother - and Boruto’s grandmother - was called the Red-Hot Habanero thanks to her fiery personality.
Kushina Uzumaki was not a native to Konoha, but the village came to love her for her grit. Gifted with silky red hair, Kushina had a bit of a temper issue which prompted her to go berserk sometimes. She earned herself the name during her Academy years when she beat several students for teasing her locks, and even the Fourth Hokage came to fear his wife’s spicy temper.
