Since BTS debuted in 2013, the group’s name has acted as an acronym for Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), a phrase which loosely translates to ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’ in English. However, it looks like the band is now working to rebrand itself in the wake of their increasing global popularity. BTS’ entertainment company BigHit has officially announced the band is switching to a new name ‘Beyond the Scene.’

According to BigHit, Beyond the Scene is mean to define BTS as “boys who prevent oppression and prejudice against teenagers. The name also is meant to represent “youth that does not settle down in reality but grows constantly toward dreams.” The name change appears to be a thematic one which capitalizes on BTS’ socially progressive lyrics and booming young-adult fanbase. The group’s most recent concepts have focused heavily on the idea of adolescence, so it is no surprise to hear BTS wants to continue exploring the complex issue in their impending comebacks.

For Korean fans, they will not notice a shift in branding; BTS has no plans at this time to ditch its original name abroad. English-speaking fans will be the audiences affected by the change, and BTS has even released a new video debuting the band’s update logo in light of Beyond the Scene’s reveal.

Naturally, fans of BTS are freaking out over the change as they come to terms with the shift.
