As the summer of 2025 came to an end, many ongoing anime also wrapped up their run. Looking back, fans witnessed some of the best titles of the year from Crunchyroll with Takopi’s Original Sin and the flashy return of Dandadan and Kaiju No. 8 with season 2. Yet one of the most anticipated returns was My Dress-Up Darling season 2, continuing Marin Kitagawa and Gojo Wakanaโs romantic development amidst the cosplay events. However, this season delivered little progress on the heart of the series: Marin and Gojoโs relationship. As with most romance anime, the central couple is either solidified in the first season or at least in the second.

The first season of My Dress-Up Darling focused heavily on showcasing the variety of cosplay while prioritizing fan service, leading fans to assume the romance would finally progress in season 2. Instead, across 12 episodes, the latest season centered almost entirely on one cosplay event after another, while introducing new characters and revisiting old ones to emphasize their shared love for cosplay. What stung even more was that near the end of season 2, the story finally seemed to lay the groundwork for romance, only for the season to close with disappointment, ending on an anime-original scene that may have wrapped the series entirely.
Crunchyroll’s My Dress-Up Darling May Not Ever Return

As the development for the final event of season 2 of My Dress-Up Darling, the Coffin group cosplay, began to unfold, fans also saw Marin decide that she would finally confess her feelings to Gojo after the event ended. With the story seemingly taking serious steps forward, fans expected at last to see the couple come together, especially after a season with no real romantic progress. However, when the moment arrived, instead of Marin mustering the courage to confess in the finale, the anime inserted an original scene of Marin and Gojo taking selfies, ending the season on an unsatisfying note.
The inclusion of this anime-original scene felt misplaced and may even suggest that the anime has no intention of continuing. The manga series also concluded earlier this year, and with season 2 adapting up to chapter 86, about 30 chapters remain untouched. Since there has been no announcement of another season, the original ending scene implies the anime may stop here without adapting Shinichi Fukudaโs remaining material.
Given that the first two seasons each covered more than 40 chapters, there isnโt enough content left for a full third season. At best, fans might get an OVA to solidify Marin and Gojoโs relationship. With two consistent seasons focused more on fan service and cosplay events than romance, My Dress-Up Darling may have written its own downfall by neglecting the very heart of the story, and it may never return as a full-fledged anime season.
