Russian Figure Skating Star Skates To Sailor Moon Theme In World Championship

Last weekend, the International Skating Union held the World Team Trophy in Figure Skating Competition. This global competition takes place every other year, and each country sends a full team of eight to compete in Tokyo at each event. This year one of the skaters did something that shocked the crowd, she based her performance on an anime theme.

Evgenia Medvedeva is a member of Team Russia's skating team, and an anime mega fan. This year the skater showed off her love for Sailor Moon with her performance on the ice. Evgenia skated out to music that the Japanese crowd recognized instantly "Moonlight Densetsu", the original opening theme for the legendary Sailor Moon.

She then continued to not only skate to the awesome anime song, but she did it dressed as the main character, Sailor Moon. She started the performance off by re enacting the opening scene of the very first episode of the show. The skater is seen singing along to the lyrics while skating to the catchy Japanese theme. She even includes a whole transformation sequence during the performance, and ends it all with Sailor Moon's catch phrase, "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!".

But Evgenia isn't just a fan of Sailor Moon, she is a die hard fan of the ice-skating series Yuri!!! on Ice. Her social media is littered with pictures of Yuri and the boys, and even has a picture of her in Japan standing next to a pop up of Victor.

If you are not familiar Sailor Moon, the iconic franchise debuted back in 1991 thanks to Naoko Takeuchi when Nakayoshi published the manga's first issue. More than 20 years later, Sailor Moon stands as one of the most influential shojo series ever created, and it popularized the magical girl sub-genre with fans all over the world. The original series is available to stream on Hulu, and they describe the series below:
