James Cameron announced last year that he will officially be tackling a live action adaptation of a popular manga Battle Angel Alita. The movie is currently in production and is filming in Texas with many big names on the call sheet. Today Jennifer Connelly, known for her Oscar performance in A Beautiful Mind, has officially joined the cast.

The movie is going to be titled Alita: Battle Angel, and Cameron plans to adapt the "spine story" of the original manga by Yukito Kishiro. He will be focusing on the original four boost from the series.

Battle Angel Alita is also known as Gunnm, or literally "gun dream" in Japan. The series was created by Yukito Kishiro in 1990 and originally published in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine. There were nine books published of the series, and a two episode anime adaptation of the series.

The series is set in the cyberpunk post-apocalyptic future world. The story focuses on the character Alita, who is a cyborg that has lost all her memories. She is found in garbage pile by a cybernetics doctor who works to rebuild and takes care of her. She remembers that she has legendary martial arts training, which leads to her becoming a bounty hunter. The story then follows Alita's attempts to remember her past and who she really is.

Robert Rodriguez is directing the live action adaptation, and James Cameron and his partner Jon Landau are producing. Alita will be played by Rosa Salazar, known for her work with Maze Runner. The call sheet for the film also included names such as Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, and Ed Skrein. Jennifer Connolly has been confirmed as one of the villains in the film.

Alita: Battle Angel is set to release in July of 2018.
