The Steel Ball Run is set to arrive on Netflix next year in 2026, though a more specific release date for the North American horse race remains a mystery. Johnny and Gyro will be joining Jolyne Cujoh as an exclusive anime on the streaming service, and the next Joestar chapter has also shared the voice actors who will bring the story to life. So far, the revealed cast includes Shogo Sakata (Chainsaw Man) as Johnny Joestar, Yohei Azakami (Demon Slayer) as Gyro Zeppeli, Kaito Ishikawa (My Hero Academia) as Diego Brando, Rie Takahashi (Oshi no Ko) as Lucy Steel, and Kenta Miyake (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders) as Steven Steel. Needless to say, there are sure to be far more voice actor reveals to pad out the large cast in the future.
The Steel Ball Run Will Need to Dodge Disaster
While the Steel Ball Run is often considered one of the best chapters of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, many anime fans remain hesitant about it being a Netflix exclusive thanks to the platform’s track record with the Joestars. For JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, the previous entry of the anime, Netflix used a unique schedule for Jolyne’s story, foregoing a typical weekly release in favor of three curated releases. Luckily, the streaming service has leaned far more into a weekly release schedule for many of its anime since Jolyne’s anime adaptation, with the likes of Sakamoto Days hitting Netflix weekly.
In terms of why the Steel Ball Run has garnered a reputation as one of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s best stories, there are several factors to take into consideration. The story itself revolves around Johnny Joestar, a man who has lost the use of his legs and hears of a cross-country horse race that might give him his mobility back. Taking place in a brand new universe, the action-packed tale features Stand battles on horseback, adding a wild new wrinkle to the “traditional” battles.
Luckily, for those who don’t want to wait to see the Steel Ball Run’s anime, the manga wrapped years ago, and creator Hirohiko Araki has been hard at work expanding the Joestar universe. Following Johnny and Gyro’s race, Araki started and finished the story of JoJolion and is currently working on the latest chapter, JOJOLands. We might be waiting quite some time to see these tales animated, but considering the popularity of the franchise, it’s only a matter of time.
