It’s more of a bad news-good news situation to be fair. The good news is that there will be more Sailor Moon Crystal in celebration of the franchise’s 25th Anniversary, Also in the good news department is the fact that director Chiaki Kon from season 3 is returning for the new content (Anime News Network).
The bad news is that the next series is not going to consist of episodes like the previous seasons, but rather will be split into two theatrical films. This move will puzzle many, and it will also likely require some splicing and adjusting content wise to fit the entire arc into the theatrical format.
The fourth arc of Sailor Moon Crystal is titled “Dream” and is set to include the Dead Moon Circus, as well as some additional Silver Millennium lore. Being that the arc includes two acts that are around 40 minutes a piece, plus 9 others that are around 20 minutes in length, it’s almost impossible not to expect some cuts to fit into the film running time format.
As you well know, anytime cuts are coupled with a fan favorite franchise like Sailor Moon, things get a little precarious, so hopefully, the team can deliver.
Why Crystal’s team is changing up the format is unknown, and no release date has been given for the project. Still, at least fans are getting more Sailor Moon Crystal, just not in the way they either hoped or expected to.
