Studio Ghibli is one of the most well known anime film studios in the world. Best known for feature films such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. The company took a brief pause in producing anything new when the company’s co-founder and award winning director Hayao Miyazaki announced that he was retiring. But the studio has been working hard on its new product, its children’s television show.

Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, is the new series produced by Studio Ghibli, which is an adaptation of Pippi Longstocking. The series is will be available exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video for streaming. According to the description the show “follows the adventures of Ronja, the only daughter of a chief bandit, who grows up in the Scandinavian woodlands and eventually makes friends with the son of the clan’s chief.”
The series is directed by Goro Miyazaki, who is the son of the acclaimed Hayao Miyazaki, and Gillian Anderson will be the show’s English narrator. Goro has big shoes to fill following the legacy that Hayao left behind, and has received recognition for his full length feature film, From Up on Poppy Hill.
This is the first television show to come from Studio Ghibli, and hopefully just the first of many. Amazon Prime taking on this anime as an exclusive isa good sign for anime fans, as it seems more streaming services are providing the audience with more ways to watch new and classic anime.
