As Dragon Ball Super has progressed, many fans believed that the Super Saiyan God transformation had been forgotten and surpassed as Super Saiyan 3 had. However, as of episode 104 of Dragon Ball Super, fans discovered that they were very wrong, as Goku‘s Super Saiyan God returned!
Goku’s Super Saiyan God form had previously not been seen or heard of since his fight with Universe 11’s God of Destruction Beerus. Especially considering that both Goku and Vegeta had unlocked Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, or Super Saiyan Blue for short. After that the form was forgotten and surpassed, it has now made a return and for a good reason as well.

Goku’s Super Saiyan God transformation has two major advantages over Super Saiyan Blue. These advantages are speed and less stamina consumption, with the latter being a key reason for Goku using this form. In a battle like the Tournament of Power, a fighter must consume as little energy early on as possible. Goku’s Super Saiyan God transformation consumes less energy than Super Saiyan Blue, which is one reason why the form is relevant again in this tournament.
However, there is another reason why Goku needs this form, as Super Saiyan God boosts the users speed further than what Super Saiyan Blue does. Universe 7’s Angel in Whis even stated that the Super Saiyan God form was faster than a Super Saiyan but weaker than Super Saiyan Blue. In addition, Goku has countered the two flaws as he can now switch from Super Saiyan God to Blue in an instant, giving him both speed and power.
Many fans assumed that the God transformation most likely wouldn’t be seen again, as the form required a ritual to be performed in order to use it. The Super Saiyan God form initially required five additional Saiyan warriors who transferred their Ki into one fighter, with the power then only being available for a limited amount of time.
After that, it was believed that the form was lost and the ritual had to be conducted again. Although, Goku canceled out this theory when he momentarily tapped into that power again on his own against Beerus, at the end of their fight. This proved that Goku could use the form again, however, for some unknown reason until now Goku hadn’t been able to use it or hadn’t seen the benefit in using it in battle.
