The SCI FI Channel has landed an award-winning Scottish actor for their new original series Stargate Universe. Actor Robert Carlyle, who has appeared in Trainspotting and The Full Monty, will star in the leading role of Dr. David Rush on the new show. Stargate Universe is the latest adventure in the Stargate franchise produced by MGM television. "We couldn't be more excited to get Robert Carlyle for Stargate Universe. He brings a depth, intelligence, and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise," said Mark Stern, who is Executive Vice President of Original Programming for SCI FI. According to the SCI FI Channel, Stargate Universe will be edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series. The series will follow a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. After passing through the Stargate, the survivors find themselves onboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space. Dr. David Rush will be one of the central characters, who attempts to unlock the mysteries of the ship and get the group home. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper are the executive producers and writers on the new series. Production on the series is scheduled to begin in Vancouver in February of 2009, and the premiere is slated for summer 2009. The premiere of Stargate Universe will be a two-hour movie event on SCI FI.
