However, Box Office Mojo is much less optimistic. They are projecting a $70.9 million opening weekend, which would put The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug well behind the opening weekend of the first film. On the plus side, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug isn't facing much in the way of competition.  Tyler Perry's A Madea's Christmas is the only other big new release, and most people have likely seen Thor: The Dark World, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Frozen by now.
