The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Box Office

How much will The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug make during its opening weekend at the box office? The projections for the opening weekend box office for The Hobbit sequel range from a low of around $75 million to a high of around $85 million. According to the Rope Of Silicon, major theater chain tracking suggests that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will have a $85.3 million opening weekend. If tracking proves to on target, then The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will beat The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's opening weekend of $84.6 million. However, Box Office Mojo is much less optimistic. They are projecting a $70.9 million opening weekend, which would put The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug well behind the opening weekend of the first film. On the plus side, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug isn't facing much in the way of competition.  Tyler Perry's A Madea's Christmas is the only other big new release, and most people have likely seen Thor: The Dark World, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Frozen by now. On the negative side, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey drew a lot of fan criticism, so people might not be that fired up about the sequel.
