Michael Mann, the first director to tackle Hannibal Lecter onscreen, has reportedly inked a deal to direct an as-yet-untitled thriller with Thor and The Avengers star Chris Hemsworth.Mann, whose most recent project was the pilot for HBO’s short-lived Dustin Hoffman drama Luck, hasn’t directed a feature film since the 2009 Johnny Depp drama Public Enemies. He’s a picky and temperamental director who’s known for working with the biggest stars in Hollywood, including Depp, Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx in the last ten years. He’s best known for directing films like Heat and Ali, as well as the film adaptation of Miami Vice, which he produced during its original run on television. In 1986, Mann directed Manhunter, a film adaptation of Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon which starred CSI‘s William Petersen as FBI Agent Will Graham and The Bourne Identity‘s Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter.Hemsworth was on tap to star in Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse, but the film has been shelved indefinitely. He’s got two major films–Thor: The Dark World and Rush–expected for release in 2013 after a 2012 that saw him star in Snow White and the Huntress, Marvel’s The Avengers and a remake of Red Dawn.No plot details or release date is known for the film.
