That might be a surprise, given Marvel’s recent penchant for making “theme” movies that play with a variety of tones; Winter Soldier was an espionage thriller, while Guardians of the Galaxy was a heist movie and Iron Man 3 had a flavor that was very distinct from the first two films in its series. Still, to hear the filmmakers explain it, the move makes sense.

“The difference between First Avenger and Winter Soldier is that seventy years had elapsed between the two movies,” Joe Russo told EW. “Cap was waking up in a world that was a million miles away from the one he came from. That gave us a narrative motivation to push the he tonal and stylistic content of the world forward. We don’t have that same time elapsed here. It’s the world Cap woke up in still, even though it’s several years later and some other significant events have happened. At the same time, we are pushing Cap to a place he hasn’t been before.”

Most of the speculation around the third film would be that it would carry on Ed Brubaker’s run (where Bucky was reintroduced as the Winter Soldier) in some form, with the most persistent rumor/theory being that they would attempt the Death of Captain America/Fallen Son storyline.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is available on streaming and on-demand services now; the film hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 9. Captain America 3 is expected to start filming in April and be in theaters May 6, 2016.
