Wright, who is best known for helming Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is co-writing the film along with David Walliams.
“Edgar will spearhead a new approach to this fascinating concept and we’re ecstatic to have him onboard as director along with David as co-writer,” said a statement from DreamWorks Animation’s Co-Presidents of Feature Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria. “We’ve always been intrigued by a film concept involving shadows, and now with Edgar’s signature comedic style and abilities as a natural storyteller, audiences will be treated to a truly captivating and energetic tale.”
For those of you with long memories, you’ll remember that Dreamworks was previously working on an animated film centered on the concept of shadows, but it was scrapped in 2013. It was titled, Me and My Shadow, and had cast Bill Hader and Josh Gad to voice characters. Wright’s film will be a new take on the shadows concept.
Wright is currently working on Baby Driver and is attached to direct the film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s children’s book Fortunately, the Milk starring Johnny Depp.
