Bohemian Rhapsody
Remember when Blue Suede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” began playing during the firstย Guardians of the Galaxyย movie and you realized how awesome that film could be? ย I got the same tingle when the opening lyrics of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” began playing as the trailer showed the various Squad members still imprisoned in Belle Reve. From the quiet sadness of Deadshot to the almost humorously calm of Harley Quinn, the opening barsย of “Bohemian Rhapsody” perfectly framed the mood of the trailer, while hinting at the madness ahead.
Guy Shoots People, He Eats People, He Burns People
Outside of Harley Quinn and maybeย Deadshot, most of the characters featured inย Suicide Squadย won’t be recognizable to casual superhero fans. Luckily, Rick Flagg helped viewers get acquainted with the Suicide Squad by explaining everyone’sย powers in a humorous fashion. ย “Deadshot,ย the guyย shoots people,” he says. ย “[Killer Croc]’s a crocodile. ย He eats people.” Flagg goes on to describe El Diablo’s pyrokinesisย as “he burns people”, Enchantress as being possessed by a witch and Harley Quinn as “just being crazy”. ย This was a fantastic way of quickly running down who’s in the Suicide Squad is without getting caught up in any messy details like names or backstories.
The Voices
Early reports have called Margot Robbieย the breakout star ofย Suicide Squad, and it’s easy to see why with this trailer. ย In one scene, Robbie’s Harley Quinn humorously suggests that voices in her head are telling her to kill a large group of soldiers (and fellow Squad members) and escape from prison. ย With a big smile, Quinn says that she’s joking before quietly admitting that’s not what the voices are telling her at all. ย From the bemused look on her face, those voices are probably telling her to do something much worse than to kill a few soldiers. ย
The Joker…As Sinister As Ever
I’ll admit that I was not a fan of the Joker’s new look when promotional pictures featuring Jared Leto’sย tattooed take of the classic Batman villain appeared online. ย But this trailer convinced me that Letoย can pull off a Joker as sinister and deranged as he appears in the comics. ย Leto’sย version of the Joker appears to be much more wantonly violent than previous movie versions of the Joker. ย Whether it’s laughing maniacally when firing an assault rifle while dressed in a tuxedo or grinning while surrounded by an assortment of neatly arranged weapons, Leto’sย Joker looks more dangerous than ever and that’s pretty fantastic.ย
Katana
Duringย The Dawn of the Justice League Special, Kevin Smith and Geoff Johns briefly discussed Katana’sย Soulsword. ย In the comics, Katana’sย Soulswordย allegedly holdsย the souls out of the people killed by the blade, including the soul of Katana’sย departed husband Maseo. ย While many in the DC Universe are skeptical about the Soulsword’s abilities, theย Suicide Squadย trailer seemed to embrace Katana’sย mystical origins. In one scene, smoky skulls seem to materialize out of Katana’sย sword and her eyes suddenly turn pitch black in another. ย Katana’sย one of DC’sย most underrated characters and it’s great to see her featured inย Suicide Squad. ย Let’s just hope she makes it to the sequel.
