Iconic comedian Jim Carrey is publicly distancing himself from Kick-Ass 2, the upcoming ultra-violent superhero film in which he stars as Colonel Stars and Stripes.”I did [Kick-Ass 2] a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” the star said via Twitter earlier this afternoon. “My apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”Carrey’s character is an amalgamation of a pair of characters from the comic book source material–Colonel Stars and Lieutenant Stripes. The pair are former mobsters who find religion and become founding members of the Justice Squadron. In the comics, Colonel Stars ended up becoming the first victim of Red Mist and his new gang of super-villains. After killing his dog and trashing his hideout, they left his defiled body to be discovered by the police. Whether that character trajectory will hold true in the film is unknown, but Carrey has been a key part of the studio’s promotion for the film up to this point.Carrey hasn’t said anything more about the decision–whether it means he won’t be doing press to promote the film or if he’s just making his opinion known. Some of his Twitter followers have speculated that the actor, who supports gun control, is simply trying to get out ahead of inevitable criticism that he starred in a violent film. As yet, neither Universal nor series creator Mark Millar have responded to Carrey’s remarks.A new, international trailer for the film debuted this week that focused pretty strongly on Carrey’s involvement.
