Turner Program Services and DIC Entertainment-produced the animated series that originally aired from 1990 to 1992 and centered on five youths gifted with magical rings by Gaia, the spirit of the planet, to defend Earth from environmental threats.

Sources for THR report: “The story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed up hasbeen who needs the kids more than they need him.”

Obviously, this project is near and dear to DiCaprio’s heart, as he is a United Nations Messenger of Peace and often uses his celebrity to bring attention to renewable energy, climate change, and human rights. He even has a new documentary, Before the Flood, that has him meeting with people most affected by climate change. It’ll air on National Geographic channels October 30.

About Captain Planet and the Planeteers animated series:

Guided by the ancient wisdom of Gaia and armed only with the will to do good with the strength of the Earth itself, 5 young Planeteers from around the globe fight to protect the planet from those ready to do it harm. Only by working as a team will their individual powers Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart combine to form the hero known as Captain Planet. Together they’ll right the wrongs of the Eco-Villains and prevent future crimes against the planet because an injustice against the Earth is an injustice against us all.
