When the “darker and grittier” second season of Shadowhunters comes to Freeform in a few weeks, expect a few changes for Luke, the character played by the recently-engaged Isaiah Mustafa, as well.
“I just wanted to give one little insight as to Luke, and you can see a side of Luke that has not been touched upon yet in the books this season,” Mustafa said. “What’s going to happen is just kind of riveting. You’ll definitely see him in a whole new light.”

Any time a TV or film adaptation starts taking liberties with the source material, it throws things for a loop. Some fans will likely disapprove on principle, while others will be excited for new/more/different material, or to see something they didn’t expect or couldn’t predict based on the books.
That said, Mustafa suggested that it’s all in keeping with what viewers already know about his past and personality.
“Well, Luke, having been a former Shadowhunter, he knows exactly how the clave works and what they’re- how they, I guess you can say the political way they handle things,” Mustafa explained. “They’re very rank and file type of decisions. I think with Luke, he can help people understand, this is how the clave acts, this is how they operate so don’t be surprised when certain things happen. And so he can warn Clary and her group of what to expect from them.”
