The film that President Obama most enjoyed this year was Ridley Scott’s The Martian, which starred Matt Damon as a NASA astronaut stranded on Mars with limited resources. Last year, Barack chose Richard Linklater’s 12-year-project Boyhood as his favorite. The First Lady was most fond of the Disney-Pixar animated film Inside Out, which has grossed $850M at the worldwide box office.

Favorite song? The President digs “How Much a Dollar Cost” by Kendrick Lamar and Michelle is smitten with Bruno Mar’s “Uptown Funk.” Favorite book? Barack found the marriage-oriented “Fates and Furies” by Lauren Groff hard to put down, while Michelle was hooked on Elizabeth Alexander’s “The Light of the World,” a memoir about the unexpected death of her husband. Favorite TV show? Barack loves Cinemax’s The Knick, starring Clive Owen as a talented but drug-addicted surgeon in New York during the early part of the twentieth century. Michelle prefers ABC’s comedy, Black-ish.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.
