Earlier this year, we got word that Universal Pictures was moving ahead with its plans to reboot the studio’s library of classic movie monsters in a shared universe. The initiative began with the release of Dracula Untold in 2014, continues with the Tom Cruise-starring remake of The Mummy in 2017 – two untitled films following in 2018 and 2019 – culminating with a movie monster team-up in 2019.

Recently, Dracula Untold star Luke Evans gave fans an update on what’s happening with Universal’s Monster Universe (via LRM), and it seems are still very early in the planning:
“There have been talks and conversations.” said Evans. “I think the bigger picture is exciting for all the monsters that they own. There is talk about it. I just don’t know how it will all manifest itself. I think it will happen and I think they’re just working out how these monsters interact and how they end up in the same realm with each other. If they can stick Captain America in a scene with Iron Man and Thor, I think you can definitely put Wolf Man, the Invisible Man, The Mummy and Dracula in the same film as well.“
With Tom Cruise involved in the franchise (even if he’s not technically playing a movie monster), and Johnny Depp set to star as the Inviisible Man in that remake, the Monster Universe is obviously courting some of the biggest stars in the world to be headlining figures in its films. Whispers point to the franchise potentially expanding to include Dwayne Johnson as The Wolf Man and Javier Bardem to play Frankenstein’s monster.
If that if all the casting goes as planned, Universal would definitely have the star power (and brand recognition) to rival DC and Marvel. Or… you know, we could end up with more films that look like Van Helsing, I, Frankenstein, or those Brendan Fraser Mummy movies. No thanks.
We’ll keep you updated on the status of The Mummy, Wolfman, Invisible Man and everything else in Universal’s Monster Universe.
