Wicked fans are probably defying a bit of gravity after learning the upcoming movie will include four new songs. Stephen Schwartz, the composer and lyricist for the Tony Award winning musical, confirmed the news at a SDCC panel yesterday afternoon. In a video (posted below), Schwartz said that three of the songs were written just for the movie while the fourth was a song cut from the original production.

Schwartz also revealed that Winnie Holzman, who wrote the book for the musical, returned to write the movie’s script. No cast has been announced, but Stephen Daldry will direct the movie adaptation.

Wicked first debuted in 2003 to rave reviews and quickly became one of the biggest Broadway hits in recent history. The musical was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning three, and is currently the tenth longest running show in Broadway history. Fans are hoping that the movie will feature original castmates Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith, both of whom saw their careers jump to new heights because of the musical.
