5 Best Versions of the Batcave, Ranked

The Batcave is probably the most famous lair of any superhero; only Superman’s Fortress of Solitude and, arguably, the MCU’s Avengers Tower come close for instant recognition. It’s been reinvented countless times and has almost always looked great whether in the comics or on screen. And you can’t really go wrong with Batman’s famous hideout; as long as you include the giant penny and the T. rex, most fans will be happy. And from the dozens of different looks DC have release over the years, these are the absolute best.

5) The Belfry

Starting off with a modern alternate Batcave, we have the Belfry. Used by the Bat-family team in Detective Comics by James Tynion IV, it was based in the middle of Gotham City and was set up in a tower. It’s not the most traditional, but it was something new that fans love. It’s one we hope to see come back, but know that’s probably not realistic.

Adding a giant bell added some nice charm to this particular cave as well; the phrase “Bats in the belfry” is, of course, where the name originated. This was a highly underrated run of Detective Comics, and the Batcave here fits that vibe exactly.

4) Batbunker

During the Dick Grayson Batman era, the Batbunker was housed under the main Wayne building when the family moved out of Wayne Manor. It was Dick and Damian’s base of operation, and of course, Alfred was by their sides as well. Despite the garage approach, it still has that Batcave charm, with the suit racks and the giant computer.

Short-lived as well, it’s another one we hope to see once again. Putting the Bat-family back in the city is a great idea that DC should take advantage of.

3) Batcave Beyond

The Batman Beyond Batcave is the definition of sleek. It’s an aged-up version of the Batman: The Animated Series Batcave and while it’s not the flashiest, it doesn’t need to be. It takes a lot of inspiration from the Tim Burton films with a flair of sci-fi.

While we’re talking about the base version from the Animated show mainly, it was used in the comic series too. And of course, both com with an accompanying cranky old man Bruce Wayne.

2) Arkham Batcave

The Arkham Games’ version of the Batcave was a basic “kitchen sink” iteration that we did not see it a lot in the games themselves, but that changed in the tie-in comics. This cave was essentially a “greatest hits” version of the Batcave. The suit racks? Check. The T. rex? Check. The Giant Computer? Check. It’s all there in the Arkhamverse.

It isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to, giving readers and players of the game a “best of both worlds” feeling. It wasn’t around for particularly long, and should have been in the games more, but it was great all the same.

1) Batman and Son

Was there ever any doubt? We had to go with the one seen in Batman and Son by Grant Morrison as the best Batcave, because it earned the accolade easily. It shows us everything we want from a Batcave and makes use of it in the story.

Add in the Batsuits and the trophies, and you have the recipe for what every Batman fan wants to see. It was great to have a Batcave that was this packed in the heyday, and it will persist as an eternal favorite.
