Dynamite Entertainment has provided Comicbook.com with an exclusive preview of the forthcoming hardcover collection of Swords of the Swashbucklers, the '80s comic from Rocket Raccoon co-creator Bill Mantlo and superstar artist Butch Guice.
The collected edition was funded via Kickstarter with an eye toward provdiing Mantlo's family with some financial security and helping to revitalize the property so that new comics could be made. The latter, at least, was an unqualified success with a new series coming soon from Dynamite and writer Marc Guggenheim (Arrow).
"Swords of the Swashbucklers has long been a favorite of mine and it remains one of the great high concepts in all of comics, which is unsurprising when you consider that Bill Mantlo and Butch Guice were the creative forces behind it," Guggenheim said in a statement. "I'm humbled to continue their work and looking forward to introducing this remarkable comic to a whole new audience."
Guice launched his comics career in the 1980s with Rom and Micronauts and became a perrenial favorite at Marvel and DC Comics, working on everything from "The Death of Superman" to Captain America.
Bill Mantlo rose through the Marvel ranks in the 70s and 80s to become one of their Bullpen's most dependable writers on comics like Spectacular Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, Micronauts, and Rom: SpaceKnight.
