It’s time to talk about horro character. We know it isn’t Halloween, but this month saw the release of R.L. Stine’s Man-Thing #1 into comic shops and that got us thinking.

Marvel Comics has a long history of great horror titles with great horror titles. If Man-Thing can get a revival, then why not some of the others? There are plenty of vampries, demons, and other things that go bump in the night to choose from.

That’s why we’re looking at some of the horror-themed Marvel has published in the past and deciding which ones are most worthy of a reboot. It was a tough job, but we think we’ve narrowed it down to the top five.

Werewolf By Night

Werewolf by Nightย starred the unfortunately named Jack Russell, an unfortunately named young man whose family was cursed.

Jack discovers the curse upon turning 18. Each month, during the three nights of the full moon, he transformed into vicious, animalistic wolf-man.

Like the Hulk before him, Jack Russell travelled as a long wanderer in order to prevent himself from letting his bestial side hurt anyone innocent or close to him.

Eventually, Jack gained some control over his shapeshifting. He is now able to transform at will, though he still falls prey to the curse during the full moon.

In the Marvel Universe, where every superhero’s gift seems to come with a curse, a werewolf like Jack fits right in.

Son of Satan

Daimonย Hellstromย is the Son of Satan. Literally. His father is the devil.

That’s been a problem for him throughout his entire life. His mother went insane when he found out and he was left to be raised by Jesuits.

As an adult,ย Daimonย Hellstromย has studied the occult and used that knowledge as an investigator and to battle against his father and his minions

Hellstrom is conflicted character with good intentions. His external struggle against his father is representative as his internal struggle against his own nature.

With the right writer, Hellstromย could become Marvel’sย equivalent of John Constantine.

Morbius, The Living Vampire

Morbius is not your typical vampire. He was not entranced by an another vampire, and he wasn’t bitten and “turned.”

Morbiusย state is perhaps more tragic because it is his own fault. Morbiusย was a brilliant scientist who was diagnosed with a rare blood disease.

Morbiusย tried to cure himself using an experimental technique of his own creation that involved vampire bats and electricity. It didn’t end well.

Morbiusย emerged with ghostly white skin, a flat nose, the ability to fly, and a thirst.

Morbiusย was introduced as aย Spider-Man villain, but these days he tries to walk the hero’s path.ย

Tomb of Dracula

Tomb of Dracula is best known for giving the Marvel Universe the vampire hunter Blade, but that’s not all.

Tomb of Dracula also featured some great supporting cast member, like fellow vampire-hunter Frank Drake and vampire detective Hannibal King.

The trio once formed a team called the Nightstalkers. and that’s a concept that’s worth revisiting.

There are plenty of superheroes to defend the light in the Marvel Universe. Blade, King, and Drake would be tasked with defending those who live in the shadows, and who are mostly forgotten by the rest of the world.

And, naturally, this would provide a great opportunity to bring Marvel’s version of Dracula back into the picture.

Midnight Sons

The Midnight Sons were essentially Marvel’sย version of Justice League Dark before Justice League Dark was as thing.

The Midnight Sons was a collective of supernatural and horror-themed heroes, including Hellstorm, Jennifer Kale, Morbius, Werewolf by Night, and Ghost Riders Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze. Other members included the Nightstalkers, Strange, and Man-Thing.

The team came together to face a series of apocalyptic, mystical threats. The first was Lilith, the mother of demons.

Later, the team reformed to take on Zarathos, a corrupt spirit of vengeance, and again to hunt zombies from otherย realities.ย

With Doctor Strange now at a new high in popularity, we think it’s time to bring the gang back together to face a new threat.
