Wonder Woman Outperforms Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad In Second Weekend Box Office

Wonder Woman may prove to have more box office stamina than any of her DC Extended Universe predecessors.

Wonder Woman surged on Saturday, earning $23.8 million. Taken in combination with the $16 million the film earned in its second Friday at the box office, projections have now been revised for the film to earn $57 million in its second weekend.

That's more than either Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or Suicide Squad earned in their second weekends, with the former earning $51.3 million and the latter taking in $43.5 million during those weekends.

This is particularly surprising since both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad had larger opening weekends than Wonder Woman ($166 million for Batman v Superman, $133.6 million for Suicide Squad, $103.2 million for Wonder Woman). This suggests that the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth for Wonder Woman compared to the mixed reception for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad is helping to give the DC Extended Universe's latest effort some extra life.

If projections hold, Wonder Woman should cross $200 million by the end of Sunday, landing at $205 million total domestic by the end of the weekend.

The Mummy earned $11.5 million on Saturday after $12 million on Friday. The film is now expected to earn just over $31 million over its opening weekend.

Animated superhero movie Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie dropped from second to third place in its second week at the box office. The film is expected to bring in a total of $12 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to over $44 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sinks down to fourth place. The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean is expected to earn $10.5 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to over $135 million.

Rounding out the top five this week is newcomer It Comes At Night. The latest horror movie from A24 earned $2.5 million on Friday alone, but some negative word of mouth seems to have had an effect and dropped its Saturday total to just $2 million. Opening weekend projections for the film have been revised to $5.7 million.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the franchise inspired by the Disney Parks ride and is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, with Jerry Bruckheimer returning as producer. Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Hector Barbossa, respectively. New Pirates of the Caribbean stars include Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also features the returns of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively after they both skipped Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
