Supergirl fans worried about Floriana Lima’s diminished role in Season 3 shouldn’t worry too much as a new actor joins the cast as Maggie Sawyer’s father.

Carlos Bernard, who played Tony Almeida in 24 on FOX, will have a guest role as Sawyer’s dad Oscar Rodas when Supergirl returns this fall.

News of Bernard’s casting was confirmed by TV Line though the actor did hint at his involvement with a tweet earlier this week.

Fans of Maggie’s relationship with Alex Danvers were dealt upset to learn that Lima was being downgraded as a season regular to a recurring role for Supergirl‘s third season, especially given the events of the finale episode that featured the Alex popping the question. But Bernard’s casting hints there are still big plans for Sanvers in the future.

Bernard’s Oscar Rodas will be a cop as well, but he does not have a particularly pleasant relationship with his daughter. An episode in Season 2 revealed Maggie’s family were conservative and did not approve when they learned she’s gay, kicking her out of the house.

We’re still waiting to find out what the future holds for Sanvers, but it sounds like Maggie will continue to have a major role on the show.

Supergirl EPs Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner both stated previously that Lima is not available full time for the season but that they’d love to have her back when they can. Provided Maggie isn’t killed off, she can return whenever her other acting commitments permit it.

Calista Flockhart also had a diminished role after being featured as a regular in the first season, but Cat Grant is said to feature more prominently in Season 3. Flockhart didn’t want to commit to filming full time in Vancouver, required of the production after the show moved from CBS to The CW. With that precedent set, there’s always a possibility Lima can return in a larger capacity in future seasons.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant. She works alongside her friend and IT technician Winn Schott and famous photographer James Olsen, who Grant just hired away from the Daily Planet to serve as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw, head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers/Supergirl, ChylerLeigh as Alex Danvers, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen/Guardian, David Harewood as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter, and Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Jr.
