This year, theater goers will be introduced to an underwater kingdom like none other – and it won’t be because of The Little Mermaid. No, the aquatic citadel of Atlantis will be brought to audiences through Justice League as Zack Snyder’s take on the DC Comic franchise gets its live-action debut. The massive film will see Aquaman join the likes of Batman and Wonder Woman as the heroes join forces to save the world. And, along the way, fans will be brought down to visit Atlantis and meet characters such as Mera.

For comic book fans, Mera will be a familiar name. The character is a quintessential one to Aquaman‘s canon, and the heroine is set to star in Justice League before inheriting a leading role in Aquaman. Amber Heard was charged with bringing the Atlantean to life, and fans got their first glimpse of her in-action during the most recent Justice League trailer. Now, the actress is back in the gym to prepare herself for a more demanding role in James Wan’s standalone film about Aquaman.
And, judging by one recent photo, Heard is going all-out with her training regime. She looks as if she just stepped out of a comic.
Taking to Instagram, Heard shared a picture of her training with Li Jing Wushu, a leading female martial artist and Hollywood stunt performer. In the photo, the actress can be seen crouching down in a sleek gym outfit as she balances a katana in her left hand. Her right hand is extended backwards for balance, and Heard is seen looking dead-ahead with a focused gaze. So, if you were the one the star just happened to be looking at, then you may want to run.
There’s no telling if fans will get to see any of Heard’s training come to life in Justice League, but many have their hopes. The ensemble flick is expected to set the groundwork for upcoming standalones like Aquaman and The Flash, so it may give fans a peek into those franchise’s peripheral characters.
In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroesโBatman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flashโit may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder, from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, and features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Ciarรกn Hinds, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg.
