DC Extended Universe fans were waiting with bated breath today, with the hope that they would receive the first look at Aquaman‘s foe Black Manta. While Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who will bring the character to life in the upcoming 2018 film, ended up trolling fans in the process, he might have given us a sneak preview at another aspect of Black Manta’s character – his voice.

In a hilarious Twitter video, which you can watch below, Abdul-Mateen wears his makeshift Black Manta costume, monologuing while holding a knife to a stack of Aquaman comics. The deep, slightly modulated voice the actor uses in the video bares a pretty striking resemblance to previous animated portrayals of Black Manta.
Now that I’ve sussed out the STRONG from the WEAK it is time to BEGIN. I warn you..BE PREPARED. I also warn… It won’t make a difference.๐๐ฑ pic.twitter.com/1Y5yPhEHHg

Of course, it’s safe to assume that Abdul-Mateen won’t sound exactly the same on screen in Aquaman, as the film has a significantly better production value than the actor wearing (what appears to be) a trash can on his head. Nevertheless, the voice Abdul-Mateen uses in the video certainly is menacing enough, and evokes a terrifying-sounding villain worthy of Aquaman director James Wan’s horror background.
Fans will have to wait until the first teaser footage of Aquaman drops, to see just how much Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta voice matches up with this video. Either way, the actor’s video is pretty hilarious, and could give us an inkling of what he will bring to the role.
