When news broke that Batman: The Killing Joke would head to theaters after its world-premiere at San Diego Comic-Con on July 22nd, fans were understandably excited. Distributed by Fathom Events, the special one-day showing will hit select theaters July 25th, and the tickets officially went on-sale today.

Tickets for the film can be purchased at Fathom Events, and the special showings will be held at 7:30 and 10:00 PM local time. Batman: The Killing Joke, which earned a R-rating for its graphic depiction of violence, will arrive at theaters a day before the film becomes available on Digital HD. For fans old enough to buy tickets for the rated R film, both Fathom Events and DC Comics are promising a movie experience like none other.

Prior to the film's showing, Fathom Events will air an exclusive documentary featuring Mark Hamill as the legendary actor shows viewers never-before-seen documentary clips of how he was cast as the Joker. The film will then be followed by a behind-the-scenes clip that shows how the Joker's "memorable yet disturbing song and dance number [from the comic] was recreated for the film."

With Batman: The Killing Joke published in 1988 under Alan Moore's direction, the fan-favorite story features the Joker as he tries to show the citizens of Gotham that anyone would turn out like he did if enough terrible things were to happen to them. Fathom Events teases the film on its site with an official synopsis which can be read below:

Based on the acclaimed DC graphic novel of the same name, Batman: The Killing Joke takes a journey into the dark psyche of the Clown Prince of Crime – from his humble beginnings as a struggling comedian to his fateful encounter with Batman that changes both of their lives forever. Years later, and now escaped from Arkham Asylum, The Joker devises a plan to prove that one bad day can make anyone as insane as he is – setting his sights on Commissioner Gordon. It's up to the Dark Knight to put a stop to The Joker's latest scheme and save one of Gotham City's finest. Following a gripping prologue introducing Barbara Gordon's heroic adventures alongside Batman as Batgirl, Batman: The Killing Joke stays true to the authentic tale that has held fans' imaginations for nearly three decades – spotlighting the birth of a Super-Villain, the fortitude of a Super Hero and the punchline that will leave you speechless.

The film will feature Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy reprising their roles as the Joker and Batman respectively from Batman: The Animated Series. Barbara Gordon and Commissioner Jim Gordon will be voiced by Tara Strong and Ray Wise to round out the main cast.
