Did [SPOILER] Just Die in Mr. Miracle #2?

Warning: spoilers ahead for Mister Miracle #2, on sale today.

Mister Miracle and his wife Big Barda went to war in today's issue of Mister Miracle from writer Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads -- and by the time they were finished, one recognizable character from Jack Kirby's New Gods pantheon was dead.

Well, more than one actually -- but there was one whose death we saw on-panel -- with seven more New Gods revealed dead in dialogue and a New God known as Stormforge, who was being tortured to death. We did not see his death on-panel but he was not rescued by the heroes, so it is likely he died. It is not clear whether Stormforge was an eighth fatality or one of the seven presumed dead.

The big one, though -- the one seen on-panel -- was Granny Goodness, the brutal general of Darkseid who was in charge of the Female Furies, and who played a role in raising (and abusing) Scott Free/Mr. Miracle and Barda when they were children.

The plot of the issue centered on battles fought in a war between New Genesis and Apokolips, with Barda and Scott eventually chosen to travel to Apokolips to broker a truce with Granny. Orion, who is acting as Highfather following the death of the actual Highfather, alerted Granny to the plan in the hopes that she would kill Scott, whom Highfather had originally wanted to take over his throne.

She shows mercy, though, because in her own, demented way she loved Scott -- but that wasn't enough for Barda, who beat her seemingly to death and left Granny, bleeding, for dead as she and Scott made their escape.

It is worth noting that, because the first issue opened with Scott attempting suicide, there are a fair number of fans who believe that the events of Mister Miracle may turn out to be non-canonical -- some kind of mental journey Scott is taking as he evades the Black Racer and tries to escape death. Some of the text would seem to support that theory, although any theory can "seem" right if you look at the text correctly.
