Butch Gilzean, played by Drew Powell, was a perennial goon for various different crime bosses over the show’s three seasons, and after he was shot by Barbara Kean in the finale many fans thought that was the end of the character. But he was taken to Gotham General Hospital where his real name was revealed: Cyrus Gold.

Whether you’re a fan of the source material or an adept user of Google, you might know by now that Cyrus Gold is the real name for Solomon Grundy, the nursery rhyme-obsessed zombie.

Gotham executive producer John Stephens recently spoke with ComicBook.com and revealed just how Butch will manage to stick around after that fatal wound, and when we can expect to see Grundy on the new season.

“Well, in many ways, his entrance is kind of quite canonical because he is gonna rise again in the Slaughter Swamp,” said Stephens, referencing the character’s origin in the comics.

“I think when he first comes in, we hit this mixture that I really like of both of the comical and the terrifying because we envisioned him, in some ways, as very much like a Frankenstein monster at the very top, someone who is very simple and is shaped by his environment,” Stephens said. “As he comes in, he could almost kind of go either direction, like he could be good or he could be malicious and violent. Unfortunately, Gotham tends to turn people towards the latter.”

The series will delve into the character’s new state and play with the possibility if Butch still exists in any capacity.

“And so you actually watch this sort of blank slate, who’s incredibly strong and powerful and has a difficulty dying, become more and more violent as he goes forward,” Stephens said. “But also it asks the question too of is there any of Butch or Cyrus Gold actually left in there, or is it only the creature Solomon Grundy that we’re watching?”

That blank memory will allow former enemies to become allies, with Grundy joining forces with Ed Nygma.

We’ll see just how their partnership turns out when Gotham returns to FOX on Thursday, September 21.
