While the ultra-successful LEGO Batman Movie nailed most of DC Comics’ most iconic villains, the film also managed to include an array of other popular movie villains.
Characters like Voldemort from Harry Potter, Sauron from Lord Of The Rings, and The Matrix agents all had parts in the film.
According to director Chris McKay however, there were plenty more that he wanted to work in at some point.
During an interview with EW, McKay talked quite a bit about the massive amount of villains in the film. After talking about acquiring the rights to them all – and working with JK Rowling to get Voldemort right – he revealed which characters missed the final cut.
“I would have had Kathy Bates from Misery, and [Sherlock Holmes nemesis] Moriarty, and at one point I pitched Daniel Day-Lewis’s character from Gangs of New York and David Carradine from Kill Bill. At a certain point, though, you have to weigh what characters the kids going to get. In LEGO, it’s sometimes hard to get a really quick interpretation of something. I was already worried that we weren’t doing enough with some characters. Also, at one point, we did put HAL from [2001: A Space Odyssey] into the movie, but it was a tough read. Maybe in future movies, we’ll try to bring more characters in.”
Those are definitely some epic villains, but many of the family-oriented audience members wouldn’t have caught the references. They would have been saved for the adults that came to see the film, and there was certainly no shortage of those folks.
