When Legends of Tomorrow finished its first season, fans were left wondering where the series would go next. After all, the rag-tag team of heroes had finally defeated Vandal Savage and his corrupt posse of Time Masters. The victory came with a price though, leaving the legends scattered across time. Naturally, fans are curious as to which direction the show will head in when Legends of Tomorrow returns to CW this fall. So, thankfully, Mark Guggenheim is stepping in to answers those fans' questions.
Executive Producer Mark Guggenheim spoke about the series' future with Collider at the TCA Summer Press Tour. While he had lots to say about Legends of Tomorrow, fans have honed in on his thoughts about Season Two. When asked if he could tells fans what to expect next season, Mark responded with an enthusiastic, "Oh totally!"
"The show has so many challenges, and certainly one of them has been that the show can be anything, so what's it gonna be? That's one of the reasons why we approach the season by figuring out, what is the team's mission statement? What is the raison d'être of the show?" he said before going on. "Once you have that structure, that does help narrow your focus."
As for where the show is going, Mark said Legends of Tomorrow will pick up six months after last season's finale. With the Time Masters gone, Rip tells the team others must now step up to protect history, so the legends offer their services. "We planted the seeds for this, at the end of last season," Mark explained. "The Legends appointed themselves because we knew we wanted them to basically be acting as time cops. That's fundamentally what they're doing, and that structure, while loose, helps focus us."
Discussing the team itself, Mark kept quiet on the crew's juiciest secrets, but he did explain each member "is in a bit of a different place." And, what's more, the producer also revealed Season Two will feature more than one baddie. While last season was busy with Vandal, Legends of Tomorrow is looking to cast an assortment of villains. "There is a season-long mythology and a season-long big bad that we're building up to, but unlike Season 1 of Legends, it's not where you're starting," he said. "It's something that slowly unfolds, and there's an element of mystery to it. In that sense, it's a lot more like Arrow and The Flash are."
Of course, Mark couldn't help but mention the Justice Society during his interview as well since the team is joining the show. The Society's entrance was also teased last season, and since then, Legends of Tomorrow confirmed the Legion of Doom would also appear. Obviously, that means there'll be a lot of people on set, but Mark is telling fans the cast is being handled carefully.
"The way we've been handling it is that you're not going to see all three teams in one episode. We're not going to cram everyone together. We would have a lot of people. We want it to not feel like an overwhelming amount of story," Mark explained.
You can catch Legend of Tomorrow when it returns for Season Two on October 13th.
