Filming begins on Suicide Squad 2 in the middle of March 2018, according to a new listing from My Entertainment World. The production listing comes after rumors of a delay until later in the year, reportedly due to Will Smith’s schedule.
This is the second piece of huge news from Warner Bros.’ DC Films division today, coming after news of The Raid director Gareth Evans in talks to to direct a movie based on Deathstroke. The film, tentatively starring Joe Mangianello, is still in development.
New director Gavin O’Connor replaced David Ayer for the sequel, though Ayer is still involved with the developing Gotham City Sirens film focused on Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.
Though the returning cast members are not yet confirmed, the production listing points toward who will likely be involved in the film:
“The film is about Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc work [sic] together to help the government.”
It’s probably safe to assume that Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Will Smith (Deadshot), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) will be involved in some capacity.
While Jared Leto seems likely to reprise his role as the Joker, keep in mind that Warner Bros. has a lot of tentative plans for the character at the moment. After reports of a new Elseworlds-style line of DC Comics-based films would kick off with a Joker origin movie, other reports surfaced of a Harley Quinn and Joker film starring Robbie and Leto surfaced.
No new reports have surfaced regarding which films are actually being made, but it shows that Warner Bros. is open to a lot of different possibilities concerning the character.
The early production date for Suicide Squad 2 might surprise some fans, but it does line up with Warner Bros. plans to fast track the movie. We’ll learn more about the film in the coming months, with film set to start rolling in five months.
