The summer of 2017 has seen one of the worst years in Hollywood's recent history as many films have struggled to pull in audiences. But the Princess of Themyscira helped put Warner Bros. in the top spot.
The company beat out every other major studio with hits like Dunkirk, Annabelle: Creation, and Wonder Woman leading the charge, garnering $790 million at the domestic box office for the lackluster season, according to Deadline.
Wonder Woman's success has been nearly unprecedented, beating films like Spider-Man, Captain America: Civil War, and Iron Man 3 to become the fifth highest grossing superhero movie in the United States with $409.4 million. It is the second biggest film of the year, falling only to Beauty and the Beast.
Christopher Nolan's latest film Dunkirk made an impressive $180.3 million over the summer, proving that directors can still be big draws at the box office. The current reigning champ at the box office for superheroes turned his eye toward World War II for his latest effort.
Dunkirk outgrossed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ($172.3m), War For The Planet Of The Apes ($140m), and Transformers: The Last Knight ($130m), another indication that sequel fatigue is wearing out audiences in the United States.
Warner Bros. also had a major hit in their shared universe for The Conjuring, with Annabelle: Creation making $90.5 million. Wait, what did we just say about sequel fatigue?
Every major studio saw a decrease from 2016's summer box office hauls, but Warner Bros. saw the smallest with only 9%. Disney's release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Cars 3, and Pirates didn't not see enough domestic returns to claim the box office title, and they were down 39% from the previous summer.
Disney also did not claim profits from Spider-Man: Homecoming, which actually gave Sony one of their biggest boons in recent years.
Hopefully Warner Bros. can capitalize on this success from Wonder Woman and improve their DC Comics based universe, with Justice League set to premiere on November 17.
