Yamato USA Debuts Strking New Batgirl Statue

While Barbara Gordon is easily the most popular incarnation of DC Comics' Batgirl, she wasn't the first take up the mantle. The original "Bat-Girl" was actually Betty Kane, who was created by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff and first introduced in 1961; however, Kane's "Bat-Girl" was later removed from continuity and reintroduced under the alias Flamebird.
Gordon's Batgirl was actually created in an attempt to get a younger audience, especially idealistic young girls, to watch the 1960s Batman television series. The show's producers requested DC to come up with a new female sidekick for Batman that could be introduce in the comics and the TV series, which was going into its third season, in the same year. DC was happy to oblige and William Dozier, Julius Schwartz, and Carmine Infantino created Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon who is a librarian by day and a crime-fighter by night.
She debuted in Detective Comics #359, titled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!" (1967), and in September 1967, Batgirl, who was played by appeared Yvonne Craig, appeared in the Season 3 premiere of Batman, titled "Enter Batgirl, Exit Penguin."
