When the Nintendo Switch was unveiled back in January, two sports titles were announced for the system – an NBA 2K game and a FIFA game. Since then, there’s been plenty of speculation about the exact nature of these two titles. Would the Nintendo Switch be getting the full up-to-date version of NBA 2K18 and FIFA 18? Or would we be getting some weird, motion-controlled arcade version? Or an out-of-date port? Nintendo fans have seen these things happen before!

Recently, we seemingly got confirmation that the Nintendo Switch will be getting a fully-featured version of NBA 2K18, but it looks like EA is going a different direction with FIFA. EA recently dropped a press release detailing what they’re bringing to the E3 2017 show floor, which included a game list:
– FIFA 18
– Madden NFL 18
– NBA Live 18
– The latest Need for Speed experience
– The Sims Mobile and The Sims 4
– Battlefield 1: In The Name of the Tsar
– New content for Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and Titanfall 2
– Madden NFL Mobile
– NBA Live Mobile
– EA Sports FIFA on the Nintendo Switch
You’ll note FIFA 18, which is coming out on the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 is listed separately from EA Sports FIFA for the Nintendo Switch, which would seem to indicate they’re different games. Back in January, EA’s Patrick Soderlund hinted this may be the direction EA was going…
“EA Sports’ FIFA on Nintendo Switch will be the most immersive, social, and authentic sports game ever created for Nintendo players. It will deliver the FIFA experience custom-built for Nintendo Switch, so you can play anywhere, play with anyone, and play how you want to play.”
Nintendo Switch getting a unique version of FIFA sounds good in theory, but longtime Nintendo fans know how these kind of “custom built” sports games typically turn out. They may have a couple neat features, but they usually have nowhere near the polish or depth as the “main” version of the game. I think most Switch owners would rather EA just give us FIFA 18 without any futzing around.
EA has yet to announce a release date for either FIFA 18 or EA Sports FIFA for Nintendo Switch.
