Developer Crytek has been rather quiet for the last few years. The company behind the Crysis series was sent into a bit of a tailspin following the failure of 2013's Ryse: Son of Rome, but it seems they're starting to get their feet back under them. Over the past year they've released a couple VR titles, The Climb and Robinson: The Journey, and now they're teasing a new multiplayer project, Hunt: Showdown.

Crytek recently released a moody teaser trailer for Hunt: Showdown, which looks fairly different than anything the studio has produced before. The game almost a Dark Souls vibe, although there's only so much you can glean from 20 seconds of footage. Here's how Crytek describes the game:

"This year's E3 marks an exciting new debut from Crytek: for the very first time, the creator of Crysis will be showing gameplay from Hunt: Showdown to select partners and media. Based on the previously announced title Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, Crytek's Hunt: Showdown has taken the original concept in a different direction under a new development team. A teaser for the upcoming PvP monster hunter went live recently, and more details about the game will soon be revealed."

A PvP monster hunter? So…will one team play as the monsters? Or do you take down monsters and opposing hunters at the same time? There are a lot of outstanding questions here, but consider me intrigued.

As mentioned by Crytek, this game began life as Hunt: Horrors of the Golden Age, a third-person co-op shooter by former Darksiders devs, in which you hunted famous 19th century monsters. Now that game sounds pretty neat. We'll see if Hunt: Showdown, which is being made by a new development team, is as promising.

We'll learn more about Hunt: Showdown at this year's E3.
