Pokemon Fans Should Temper Expectations for Tomorrow’s Mystery Reveal

Last week, Pokemon fans (mainly in the US and Europe) were captivated by a mysterious video that sprung up on the gaming franchise’s Japanese YouTube page. The two minute video showed off some of the weirder parts of the Pokemon universe, including aliens, time travel, ancient legends and alternate dimensions.

The mystery video even came with a tie-in website that played the “Ruins of Alph” music from Pokemon Gold and Silver and teased an announcement coming July 19th.

The internet immediately erupted with wild speculation as to what the mystery announcement could be. Was it a reveal about Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon? A movie announcement? A Pokemon X-Files game?!? This was despite Pokemon experts (including ourselves) warning fans not to get their hopes up.

Daisuki Club

The video is tied to theย Daisukiย Club, an officialย Pokemonย fan club run by theย Pokemonย Company. The Daisukiย Club is the Japanese equivalent to the Pokemonย Trainers Club in the US and strives to keep its fans both entertained and up to date on the latestย Pokemonย news.

Although you might not have heard of the Daisukiย Club, you’ve probably seen its work. The Daisukiย Club madeย the goofy Magnemiteย video that made the rounds earlier this year, as well as all thoseย silly puppet videos featuring Pikachuย and its friends.ย

To keep fans thinking about Pokemonย all the time, theย Daisukiย Clubย periodicallyย publishesย mangaย and websites for their fans that explore lesser known parts of theย Pokemonย universe. For instance, a few years ago, the Daisukiย Club released a series ofย images to help fans visualize how HMsย really worked in the Pokemonย universe, including this hilarious picture showing a Pidgey flying its trainer to a new town.

Whatever the movie is teasing, it’s almost certainly either a one-off mangaย or a website exploringย the extraterrestrial side of Pokemonย that features a couple of new pieces of artwork.

What the Video Isn’t

We’ll knowย the answer to the “mystery video” Wednesdayย morning, but there’s a few things that we can almost certainly rule out. It’s not a video game announcement forย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon,ย Pokemonย Mystery Dungeon, orย Detectiveย Pikachu.ย Nintendo and the Pokemonย Company makes those sort of announcements jointly, andย almost always through a Pokemonย Direct video (which are announced in advance and not teased through a mystery video).

It’s also not a new anime series. While a Pokemonย Generationsย style-anime about the strange mysteries of the Pokemonย universe sounds cool, they’re also expensive to make andย Nintendo would likely make a bigger deal of it then a Japanese-only video and website. There’s also no reason for a secondary animeย series, even ifย Pokemon: Generationsย was well-received.ย

Let’s face it: if the video was actually a big deal, Nintendo and the Pokemonย Company would have at least released the time they were going to drop the announcement.ย Whatever the video is, it’ll likely be something fun and totally inconsequential. Pokemonย fans should expect to wake up to something fun tomorrow morning…but not something big.
