If you’re looking for a gift for a Pokemon fan, you might be a little overwhelmed, especially with all the choices out there. With several Pokemon games currently on shelves, plus all the Pokemon cards, plushes, and other merchandise out there – you might not know what to get that special Pokemon trainer in your life.
Luckily, we’re here to help with a special Pokemon gift guide, divided up by what type of person you’re buying for. Whether you’re looking for a gift for a new Pokemon trainer or are trying to find a gift that says “I choose you!” to that special someone in your life, we’ve got you covered!
Note: If you purchase one of the awesome products featured below, we may earn a small commission from the retailer. Thank you for your support.
Finding That Perfect Pokemon Game
The easiest Pokemon present to buy a Pokemon fan this season isย Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the newest pair of Pokemon games that came out earlier in November.ย The new games are for the Nintendo 3DS, so you’ll want to make sure that the person you’re buying the present for has that particular handheld system (or a Nintendo 2DS, which runs the same software) before buying it. Pokemon Ultra Sun is available here. Pokemon Ultra Moon is available here.
One note: Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon are a “pair” of Pokemon games, which each contain very minor differences in gameplay, story, and which Pokemon a player can catch. A player only needs either Pokemon Ultra Sun or Pokemon Ultra Moon, and it doesn’t matter which one you buy them (unless they already have it, of course!)
If you’re looking for a cheaper and more retro option, players can also buy Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver. While these games originally came out over 15 years ago, Nintendo re-released both games as Virtual Console games earlier this year, so players can download them on their Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 2DS and re-live the nostalgia. You can buy a special card that allows players to download Pokemon Gold or Pokemon Silver for just $9.99 each right here.
Pokemon Cards
Pokemon cards are still a popular gift for kids, but the sheer volume of possible Pokemon products can be a bit overwhelming for a lot of parents and relatives.
If your youngster is looking to get into Pokemon cards for the first time, we recommend buying a Trainer Kit, a special boxed set that contains two 30 card decks and detailed step by step instructions on how to play the game. This is a perfect gift for kids wanting to learn how to play the game, and for parents who know that they’ll need to learn how to understand their child’s new hobby.
For players who already have an extensive Pokemon card collection, it might be easiest to just buy a couple of tins for their Pokemon enthusiast. Each tin comes with a special variant holofoil card and several booster packs, which every player enjoys opening. Even if you pick out a tin that your youngster already has, they can still use the tin for storage and even trade away the holofoil card to a friend for something they don’t have. You can find loads of tins right here.
If you’re really looking to blow a Pokemon card player away this holiday season, there are two special oversized box sets in stores now. The “Premium Trainer XY Collection” contains 14 exclusive full art holofoil cards that can’t be obtained anywhere else, and are some of the most powerful cards used by world champion level players. The collection also comes with deck boxes, card sleeves, dice, and everything else that a card player could possibly need.
The “Shining Legends Super-Premium Collection” is a similarly huge boxed set containing four special promo cards, 10 booster packs, a playmat, and collector boxes, all of which should delight any Pokemon card fan.
