While we wait patiently to see just when God of War will release on PlayStation 4, Sony tempted us further by releasing a new episode of the ongoing Lost Pages of Norse Myth podcast, with the developers at Sony Santa Monica taking a closer look into the game’s production.

The episode can be found here, with a teaser snippet posted in the video below. In it, the team goes over the weapons that are available in the game, including Kratos’ Leviathan axe, as well as the shield, which is “quick as a flash, but withstanding blows that would tear ordinary defenses asunder. It’s an armament worthy of a true guardian.” And last but not least, there’s Atreus’ bow, capable of hitting foes from a distance with arrows. You can see the images throughout this article.
Lead gameplay designer Jason McDonald and lead gameplay engineer Jeet Shroff also talk about the game’s combat, and how it’s been slightly toned down from previous, more visceral God of War games. It turns out that Kratos is actually holding himself back because of the presence of his son, even though he’s still all about brutality when he needs to be.
But Atreus can utilize Norse magic as well, as “he takes a more magical approach to getting things done. He is more involved with that sort of world.” Kratos takes caution to this magic, especially with his previous run-ins with gods.
The former God of War definitely takes a calmer approach to combat this time around, since he’s not as “super-angry” as he was in his younger days. But he can still finish off a foe in style, as you might have seem from previous gameplay clips. You can also activate a rage mode, in case you need to push him to the next level. It’s still very satisfying combat, even if it works on a different level than before.
The podcast is definitely worth a listen, especially to God of War fans, so be sure to download it when you get the opportunity.
God of War will release sometime in 2018 for PlayStation 4.
